Sumo Kaboom! Kachi-Koshi Bingo Cards Up

I’ve got mixed feelings about this upcoming tournament. We’ve got a rash of kyujo from Covid-19, including the Dai-Yokozuna, Hakuho. Kakuryu is likely in but his body is not and his confidence is low. We may be days away from retirement. I had such hopes for 2021 to start out with an amazing Yokozuna showdown on senshuraku. That will not happen.

At the same time, though, this tournament could raise spirits for those needing something positive. And the Japan Sumo Association is in dire need of positive cash flow. But Covid-19 infections are spiking not just in Japan, but around the world. Having sumo to turn to may help us. The Kyokai has done this safely and with the proper precautions, they can do it again. I hope.

To help me get into this, Sumo Kaboom! has published their Bingo cards. The link is on their Instagram page. I have picked up mine. Right off, I’ve got Hakuho in the top corner square. I’m still very hopeful that a few good wins to start the tournament will bring back Kakuryu’s confidence and that award-winning smile. If so, that line of Kakuryu through Aoiyama may be a winner. However, I think Hoshoryu through Takakeisho will be my best bet. I may actually get a bingo this time around!

Kachi-Koshi Bingo

Alrighty then. Day 10 finally gets our first kachi-koshi records for the Aki 2020 basho. At the beginning of the tournament, Laurie and Leslie from Sumo Kaboom! put together the Kachi-Koshi Bingo. Clearly, we didn’t know who would go kyujo. Kiribayama’s the latest in a string of absences. Yutakayama, Kotoshogiku, Kyokutaisei, Ishiura, along with both Yokozuna and Abi.

Ah, such is the game. If you’re like me, and you only play one card, we’re kinda SOL. I don’t exactly fit the mold of the avid Bingo Parlor resident, 8 cards at the ready…yet. So I have not (yet) gone back to the link and put in my “Big Al” alias. YET. I know there are several out there with much worse luck, who could be in the running for make-koshi bingo or the Kyujo Bingo. I’m dying that Shodai’s blocked by Shohozan, who picked up his make-koshi on Sunday, and Tokushoryu who may get it tonight against Hoshoryu.

Regardless, last night five men picked up their kachi-koshi. If you’re lucky enough to have a row with Takakeisho, Shodai, Wakatakakage, Onosho, AND Tobizaru, you’re in luck! If it were me, I’d go out and buy a lottery ticket or two (or 70). My mouth watered when I looked at my card and saw, Shodai, Takarafuji, Wakatakakage…SHOHOZAN?!?! Shoot.

I think my best (only?) chance lies on the Takanosho, Kotoshoho, Hokutofuji, Ichinojo, Tobizaru line — and that’s only got one confirmed kachi-koshi. Takanosho and Kotoshoho are two wins away, Ichinojo’s three, and Hokutofuji’s still five away! Make-koshi — and a solid block — will be confirmed tonight for either Hokutofuji or Ryuden. Even if Ryuden wins, another Okinoumi loss blocks that row. Well, at least I don’t have a make-koshi bingo yet. No free-space joy in this version…instead I got Enho for the 4-way block. Oh well…I may wait until November or, go click on the link and register an entry for each kid and my buddy “Snidely Whiplash.” I’d never be so, underhanded, though. Though I would pull a henka on a fellow Yokozuna on senshuraku…so maybe?

I had the distinct pleasure of chatting about sumo with Leslie and Laurie from Sumo Kaboom yesterday. The two of them have been running a sumo bingo game and thought we’d collaborate on a new Kachi-Koshi bingo. We hope you all will enjoy. Aside from bragging rights, there’s some of the Sumo Kaboom homemade fig jam in it for the winner!

Yesterday, I talked their ears off for a good long time and I think you’ll be able to hear some of it later this week (maybe Wednesday), so head over there and you can listen to me drone on until I forget what I’m talking about — or choose from any of their other 30 or so episodes. The Mariah Holmes episode is fascinating, in particular, and gives a glimpse into the amateur sport which we touched on briefly in our wide-ranging chat.

I’ve got my card and I’ll start filling it in starting this weekend when Shodai picks up his kachi-koshi. Sadly, it seems Asanoyama is nowhere to be found on my entry. Geez, I’ve really got the Kiss of Death, don’t I? Again, the rules are below:
