Haru 2024 opened under the cloud of scandal. Hokuseiho, the heyagashira (top-ranked) rikishi in Miyagino-beya was forced to resign a few weeks before the tournament due to abuse of fellow stablemates. During the investigation, it was found that the stablemaster, former Hakuho, had known of the abuse for more than a year but had not alerted the Kyokai or done much of anything to stop it. As a result, the entire heya was put under temporary management with the future of the heya, and the careers of Hakuho and Ishiura, in question.
Michinoku-beya will also close at the end of the tournament due to the retirement of Michinoku-oyakata. Kirishima will move to Otowayama-beya with Kakuryu while others in the stable will move to different stables. We learned on senshuraku that Yuki, Kirishima’s flexing tsukebito and oft-bow twirler, is retiring. That fact was unknown to fans prior to the tournament.

Takerufuji and Onosato swept the awards. Takerufuji took home everything: yusho and outstanding performance, fighting spirit, and technique special prizes. Onosato also took home fighting spirit and technique prizes. He would have won the outstanding performance prize if he had won the yusho.
