With just a few days to go until the Nagoya Basho starts, here are the scorecards for the Makuuchi and Juryo divisions.
For those wondering why rikishi who have gone kyujo before the scorecards go out, there is a reason. I goal is that these documents are not just scorecards, but also a form of a banzuke for those who like to keep their own records of the changes in sumo from basho to basho. I also keep a rikishi’s name on just in case they were to join part way through a basho. For these reasons. every scorecard will have a spot for each rikishi ranked on the official banzuke, and only in the most special of circumstances (ex: Takanoiwa) will their bracket be changed.
Here’s hoping that you keeping score at home and that we get another exciting Basho!

One thing I really love are the days just prior to a particular basho when I know my all-time favorite, Hakuho, is healthy and motivated and looking to dominate for all 15 days. I love everything about the guy—-the attitude, the personality, and, of course, the mind-boggling ability. He’s so much fun to watch because he does things that no one else ever seems to do. Whether it’s hugging the ref after a bout or protesting the lack of a call from the judges or his wry smirk after he knows he just beat a guy who appeared to have had him against the ropes or even just leading the hand claps or ”banzais” after a victory. NOBODY else does this stuff. In a sport that does its damnedest to take the personality out of its rikishi, it’s great to know they’ll never be able to do that to The King of the Ring.
I really hope I can find the Juryo matches to watch. It was hard last time because so many sites weren’t available.
