Ura Loses Day 3

Ura Aki Day 3

Former Makuuchi rising star Ura was handed his first loss of Aki on day 3 when Daishoki applied a well timed tsukiotoshi. On day 2, Ura looked like a Makuuchi or Juryo rikishi who had decided to play around in Sandanme. On day 3 he looked like a rikishi still working hard to recover his ring sense and balance after a risky and painful medical break.

With this loss, Ura drops to 1-1, and as Herouth has pointed out, he has eliminated a short-cut into Makushita that might have been granted him if he had gone 7-0 and claimed the yusho. Ura will instead face a long hard grind back to his pink mawashi. We know he will gamberize. We know he can make it.

Ura’s Returns To Competition – Day 2

Ura waves

Many fans, myself included, have been eagerly awaiting the return of Ura. After suffering a painful and crippling knee injury, he took the bold step to have surgical reconstruction, and a long recovery. His extended absence from competition sees him ranked near the bottom of Sandanme, a long way from his former mid-Makuuchi post. This is actually very good for Ura, as it gives him a chance to get back to competition sumo against a different class of opponents.

As with day 1, Sandanme is mostly having east and west rikishi of the same rank face off. His opponent is Sandanme 91 Sumanoumi, from Takadagawa heya. Sumanoumi has been a Sandanme main-stay since 2013. I expect Ura to start off a bit conservative, and perhaps a bit rusty. His practice matches featured his recognizable low and crazy sumo, and I will be curious to see if he brings that out today.

We will be watching his return match, and will share results as soon as they are known.

Fan Treat – NHK Ura Video (Surgery Recovery and Aki Basho Workup)

Because you have all been such nice sumo fans, I now shamelessly share this video (in Japanese for everyone to practice their skill) recapping Ura’s injury, recovery and return to sumo competition. We are treated to watching him work his rebuilt knee, struggle with physical therapy, and generally gamberizing the crap out of his life for the last year.

The sumo world is going crazy with fans rejoicing over the return of many favorites to the dohyo, and we are right there with them!

Now everyone stay calm while I try to find a way to get to Tokyo today.

Ura To Compete, Terunofuji Kyujo

Ura-Cartoon

Tachiai can now confirm the competition status of two fan favorites. First, Ura is definitely a go for competition. He is ranked Sandanme 91 West. After hideous damage to his right knee Last year at Aki, he went the route of undergoing surgery, and has been working to rebuild his body since. This will be his first time in competition in a year, and I am very curious to see how long it takes him to re-connect with his sumo. Should he step up primed and genki, there is a strong chance that lower Sandanme rikishi may find themselves quickly going down to defeat.

The matter of Terunofuji is also hopeful, but with a different course of action. The big Kaiju is sitting out Aki, having also chosen to undergo reconstructive surgery. Terunofuji has mountains of talent, and a strong work ethic. It seems that he has accepted that he is rebooting his sumo career, and at this point it won’t matter what rank he falls to, as long as he comes back strong and healthy. He is currently ranked Makushita 47, but we expect him to be out several basho.

Aki starts in about 36 hours, and frankly Team Tachiai can’t wait.
