Kyushu Storyline #6: Hakuho’s Health

As Bruce has written about pretty extensively, Hakuho will return to the dohyo in Fukuoka. This will be the first tournament in his entire career where he will be ranked behind the other two yokozuna. He’s dropped to Yokozuna West a handful of times but seeing him out of “top dog” status is making people wonder if the end of his career is in sight. I hope not. The Aki Basho was the first he has missed since 2006. His longevity and health has us spoiled. Chiyonofuji missed 6 tournaments over his career, not including another six tournaments where he pulled out early due to injury. Again, Hakuho has only done that once. He’s been scary healthy. Wicked healthy. I wouldn’t start worrying until he begins taking consecutive tournaments off…or loses heart. Let’s face it, he’s got almost all of the records and the only thing that can really stop Hakuho is himself. 白鵬、頑張れ!

Kyushu Storyline #5: Mitakeumi Joins Sanyaku

I decided to split these promotion storylines in two: those making their debuts in makuuchi as one storyline, and this second one about Mitakeumi’s climb into the sanyaku as Komusubi. Last basho was excellent at Maegashira #5. His best bout was likely his win over Takayasu since Takayasu was also on a roll and got a special prize for wins over two yokozuna and two ozeki. But this time Mitakeumi’s going to get blasted again by yokozuna. I call this the YO-YO schedule because he’ll be fighting yokozunas and ozekis to start the tournament. Two tournaments ago he was M1 and lost his first 5 bouts. This time, he may face a hobbled Terunofuji in those first few days and that would likely be his best shot at a win in the first week. Even if he doesn’t win, he can scrap. I just hope he’s more competitive this time against the yokozunas. His fights against Hakuho and Harumafuji were blink-and-you-missed-it affairs.

Kyushu Storyline #3: Sinkhole

92317504_851409a7-d43f-4833-ba61-9f1244b25673Sumo has arrived in Fukuoka but someone forgot to get the roads outside Hakata station ready for the extra weight. Ichinojo stepped outside and the Earth gave way. Seriously, this would be quite a sight to see. If you’ve got photos or video, tweet them and I’ll try to retweet when I get home. Fortunately Hakata station isn’t that close to the Fukuoka Kokusai Center.

Sumo Kyokai Executive Officers

The Sumo Kyokai is in charge of professional sumo so it’s probably a good idea to understand more about the organization and the people. While there are some members who were not wrestlers, the executive officers were all successful in the top division. With Kitanoumi’s death a year ago this month and Chiyonofuji’s death over the summer, there’s been quite a bit of change…which we kind of get to ignore. The other day the Kyokai listed the whole group on the website. In Japanese. It’s taking me a while to get through the whole bunch so I’m going to start with the Executives. This will also give a glimpse into some of the more important committees and roles which I hope to feature in future posts. I have a feeling the Lifestyle Guidance Manager role will be particularly interesting to research. I mentioned that to my wife and it evoked memories of little rule books carried by middle schoolers, bans on ear piercings and strict dress codes.
