Spectacular, Rarely Seen Throw

As Andy mentioned, possibly the most impressive bout on Hatsu day 1 was Yoshikaze’s defeat of Chiyoshoma, using a rarely seen kimarite – the Tsuriotoshi. This is when the attacker picks up his opponent by the mawashi and throws him down.

In the case of Yoshikaze, it’s where you pick up Mongolian born Chiyoshoma and toss him off the dohyo like a sack of rice.

Also of note – Yoshikaze is wearing a different mawashi thank his traditional green. Sumotori do this some times to change their fortune, to make a clean break from a past record they wish to improve. With the new year’s basho the prime time to make such a switch.
