We also have terrible news in from the infirmary that Takayasu’s back pain will keep him out of action from Day 3. This is karma hitting sumo fans below the belt because Takayasu had been doing well in this new blue mawashi. I had hopes he would figure in the yusho race. Oh well.
Day 3 Results
Takarafuji (3-0) defeated Roga (1-2)!!! Yorikiri.
Tsurugisho (2-1) defeated Tokihayate (0-3). Sukuinage.
Oshoma (3-0) defeated Tomokaze (0-3). Okuridashi.
Churanoumi (2-1) defeated Mitoryu (0-3). Tsukiotoshi.
Ryuden (3-0) defeated Nishikifuji (1-2). Uwatenage.
Sadanoumi (1-2) defeated Hokutofuji (1-2). Tsukiotoshi.
Kinbozan (3-0) defeated Ichiyamamoto (1-2) Tsukiotoshi.

Kotozakura (2-1) defeated Hiradoumi (1-2). Oshidashi.
Hoshoryu (1-2) defeated Daieisho (2-1). Yorikiri. YAY!
Atamifuji (2-1) defeated Kirishima (1-2). Oshitaoshi. Groan. You can even see Kirishima trying for the slapdown but he was so far out of position for it to be effective. Instead, he gets yeeted again? His troubles all go back to that Terunofuji bout. He was at the peak, then poof.
Coverage Note
Tomorrow will be abbreviated coverage again, unfortunately. Mitakeumi yusho? If Takarafuji wins the yusho, I will eat my hat. Hey, at least the Takarabune has had clear sailing these first few days!

When people were getting excited yesterday about a possible Takayasu yusho, I decided to hold off, because we’ve been disappointed so often. But I didn’t expect the disappointment to be so brutally swift. I’m never going to have any expectations for him, unless I see the big silver cup actually being handed to the big hairy guy. Only then!
Me too. I’m holding off until Senshuraku.
seriously, this natsu basho is becoming No-show-basho.
Good grief. I hope we don’t end up with 4 or 5 members of Makushita fighting regularly in Juryo because they’re pulling people in Juryo up to the top division fill in for injured rikishi.
Absolutely brutal. This Cup feels like it will be one of attrition instead of skill.
There were few good bouts today.
Ryuden, Sadanoumi, Ura.
Ura’s Katsukashi was a treat to watch.
Kiribayama running out of fuel, it looked like there was a henka attempt from him.
Dominating win by Atamifuji
While I love seeing the guy in the Chiefs shirt front and center during the top division coverage, I can only hope that having some representation of the back-to-back champs in-house will stem the tide of bad luck this basho is going through. So many fallen rikishi already, in all divisions! They’re gonna struggle to fill the allotted time soon. Lost in all this is the probable retirement of Kotoeko after falling to Makushita. I’m gonna miss that lavender-clad guy and his fighting spirit.
Yeah, I’m keeping my eyes peeled for the announcement.
This tournament is starting off s little weird, but may end up being very interesting. No Yokozuma’ and, Like zoysia grass in Winter, our Ozeki seem to be going into dormancy, providing a good opportunity for others to step up! Who knows, next week this time there could be a great leaderboard. I’ve seen that determined look in the eyes of my fave Mitakeumi. Don’t let Tamawasi’s faint smile fool you. He can choke you to death and gouge out an eye at the same time. And you never know what Ura has up his sleeve. Glad to see Takarafuji kick some butt.

That bouncy little guy is about supporting on both of his shoulder all the entertainement in this basho right now. ^_^

I also wonder as to his mental condition and disappointments.
Tough being a Kirishima fan right now. Yikes!. After sustaining a neck and shoulder injury before the last basho, he then lost all confidence at the tachiai, being unable to charge and just really “receiving”. He seemed to have finally overcome that, with ex-Kakaryu’s help (Kakaryu thought it was a mainly mental issue), in an awesome inter-stables practice display where “the old Kirishima” was back. But alas, maybe not :(
Absolute worst case scenario for me: Kotozakura, Atamifuji, or Onosato wins the yusho.

Just not a fan. Call it grumpy old man syndrome or whatever you like but they just don’t excite me. No denying their talent and that they are part of the future but to me they’re just meh.
Nuff said. To each their own.
I hope Kotozakura can go all the way.
