Today is setsubun, the last for the current Emperor. Herouth’s got some great highlights on her Twitter feed from this year’s mame maki events. Goeido was back home in Osaka with Hakuho, Mitakeumi, and Okinoumi? in Kanto. Hakuho walked rather gingerly down the temple stairs. Great timing for a month break.
I was re-reading my post from last year…are the giant maki rolls still a thing? Also, has anyone seen the stage version of Groundhog Day?
Hakuho is not taking a month’s break. There are two major hana-zumo events (NHK charity event and Fuji TV “Grand Sumo Tournament”). If you goes kyujo from those, he can’t do the Hakuho Cup. So he is participating.

I picked a butterbean out of my stew and threw it out into the the back yard accompanied by a hearty “Oni wa soto!”. Not sure if the demons were scared but Bob the cat certainly looked somewhat perplexed.
The event showed one thing. Although Hakuho is left-hand dominant on the dohyo, he is clearly right-handed.

just want to point out that i think the ” Nest Basho countdown day counter”….thingna-ma-bob…whatever it is call in the top right corner of the site is broken…..maybe ?!
It’s still saying the Hatsu Basho has begun. And we don’t have the countdown until the Great Sumo God will bless ours soul with great sumo and every divine food that come with it!
